COBB COUNTY, Ga. -

A local plastic surgeon is defending herself against allegations of negligence following the death of a patient who had a liposuction procedure at her Kennesaw facility.

The family of April Jenkins has filed a civil lawsuit after they say the Jenkins, 37, died last February after undergoing a liposuction procedure by Dr. Nedra Dodds at Opulence Aesthetic Medicine in Kennesaw.

Dodds wouldn't discuss  the allegations of negligence that are spelled out in the suit, but she maintains medical staff at Opulence Aesthetic Medicine are highly trained and that cosmetic surgery procedures at the Kennesaw facility are performed in fully equipped operating rooms.

"I would like people to know that the situation involving Ms. Jenkins expiring is actually a very common risk and complication of multiple surgical procedures -- not just of liposuction," said Dodds.

Dodds says medical professionals in her field face unique challenges.

"We are dealing with patients where you don't get to know them as well as a primary care physician," Dodds said. "Patients often do not disclose all of their medical problems to you."

An attorney for the Jenkins family told FOX 5 that he uncovered several alleged irregularities in the surgery, even though a medical examiner ruled Jenkins died of natural causes, suffering a cardio-respiratory death, which is a known complication from liposuction.

"I've done well over 10,000 surgical procedures without any type of complications of any type," Dodds said.

As the demand for plastic surgery grows, Dodds said she stresses to patients that surgery of any kind carries some risk.

"We want to take the time to inform you of these procedures and also, as a person, to make an informed decision because I want to be on the side of preventive maintenance and not damage control," Dodds said.

Dodds said that patients really need to do their homework when considering a cosmetic procedure and be aware of any potential risks involved.
