Red Wings take time-out for stop at Selfridge

HARRISON TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WJBK) -

Hockeytown is heading north for training -- but some of its citizens are taking time-outs along the way for some community good will.

Detroit Red Wings players, including goaltender Jimmy Howard and forward Patrick Eaves, on Tuesday stopped at Selfridge Air National Guard Base in Harrison Township near Mount Clemens to meet troops and sign autographs.

"Our fans, no matter where we're at, always come out and pull for us and I think we all feel it's necessary to give back," said Howard.

Other groups of players were scheduled to make stops across Michigan's Lower Peninsula en route to the team's annual training camp in Traverse City.

Stops include Bronson's Children Hospital in Kalamazoo and the Michigan State Police Training Academy in Lansing. Players also will visit schools in Frankenmuth and Mount Pleasant, and the Coast Guard station in Grand Haven.
