9/11 museum unveils Survivor Tree seedling program

Just a short time ago, the Granite Mountain Hot Shots were honored during a ceremony in New York. The town of Prescott is one of three cities being honored during the Mets major league baseball game Wednesday, for heroism in the face of disaster.

A heartfelt gesture on this day of remembrance. A special moment before the New York Mets play the Washington Nationals in New York.

Fans show they will never forget the sacrifice and heroism of that day. And before the game begins, a gift for heroes in Prescott. Part of a very special tree: the survivor tree.

"This is a seedling from a tree that survived at ground zero and they took that tree and replanted it and these are some of the saplings. A program they are starting now, they are giving out unfortunately to tragic situations," says Wade Ward, Prescott Fire Department.

Seedlings from a tree that somehow made it through the 9/11 attacks at the World Trade Center.

"Just the thought of them including us in this process and realizing the significance of our loss is just a great honor."

Prescott plans to use its tree as part of its permanent memorial to the Granite Mountain Hotshots, when it is completed.

"Just to be included in that thought and incorporate that tree into something someday, we will take our time, do the best we can."

Division Chief Darrell Willis, who started the Prescott hotshot crew, was also in New York to receive the seedling.

Other parts of the survivor tree are going to Rockaway, New York -- hit hard by Superstorm Sandy, and Boston, after the Boston marathon bombing.
