White announces re-election bid in Chicago

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (Associated Press) -

Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White says he's seeking a fifth term in office and hinting that it could be his last.

The 79-year-old made his re-election bid official Thursday in Chicago surrounded by some of the city's most prominent Democrats. Mayor Rahm Emanuel praised White's overhaul of the office and his service to children. White runs a gymnastic group he founded. It's called the Jesse White Tumbling Team.

So far, White faces no opponents. He was first elected to the office in 1998. In 2010 he received the most votes of any candidate seeking public office since 1978.

White had once said that 2010 would be his last race but then reversed his decision. On Thursday White said that if he wins re-election that it may be his last.
