3 arrested in off-duty cop attack, including 2 juveniles

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

A disturbing video shows an off-duty officer struggling to fight off a group of attackers during a carjacking. FOX 32 confirmed that three people were arrested on Friday, including two juveniles.

The thugs police are looking for took more than just the officer's personal vehicle. They also got away with his gun, his vest and his badge. Now, police are reviewing security camera video trying to track down those responsible.

The security camera on a building at 70th and East End shows what appears to be five males walking down 70th Street as the officer's SUV drives by.

Moments later, the off-duty sergeant stops and gets out. He is then confronted by five or six people, who, according to witnesses and police, beat the officer and then took his 2006 Infinity QX56.

"I was thinking the guys in the neighborhood were just taking people out of their cars and that made me really nervous and scared," one woman told FOX 32 News. "No one wants to see that happen outside their home, where you feel safe, where you're supposed to be safe."

Police say the officer had been visiting a friend in the 6900-block of South East End when he saw several males running from his vehicle.

During the confrontation, the officer sustained cuts and scratches on his head and body, but was treated at the scene.

Police said the officer's gun, bullet proof vest and police star were stolen during the attack, but they would not clarify if it was taken during a break-in before the carjacking, or stolen with the vehicle.

Police looked at surveillance video and two people were identified as persons of interest.

Neighbors said the cop's SUV was recovered a few blocks away, but police would not confirm that. They did, however say the officer's cap and his baton were recovered near Diversey and Sheridan on the city's Near North Side.

Neighbors say with several cul-de-sacs nearby, this area leaves drivers vulnerable to crime, and they say there have been several other carjackings recently.

"For myself, to get into my property, I have to pull in, stop, get out the vehicle, open the gate, come back to the vehicle and that's an opportunity for anybody to be carjacked at that point," neighbor Rodney Baker says.

Because the investigation is on-going, police are not releasing any more specific details about what happened, but a source did confirm that police recovered the officer's vehicle near the scene of the carjacking. They also got fingerprints that they believe belong to at least one of the suspects.
