NJ company makes storm-resistant windows

NEW JERSEY (MYFOXNY.COM) -

Inside the New Brunswick, N.J., testing lab of Silver Line by Andersen, the company launches 9-pound two-by-fours at 35 mph into high-velocity windows.

The company's marketing vice president, Andrew Karr, said the outside layer of these windows is supposed to shatter. But the second level will bend but won't break.

The company's new line of impact-resistant windows is also exposed to water infiltration, air infiltration, and structural testing. Karr said the windows are tested to meet the toughest safety requirements in the country. The company decided to make such strong windows after the devastation of Superstorm Sandy.

Here's how it works: the Silver Line impact-resistant windows have a tough rigid layer of plastic bonded between two pieces of glass. You can see after two hits from the two-by-four that nothing has pierced through.

Product manager Swati Jain said that as homeowners rethink life along the coastline, more and more are choosing impact-resistant windows as they rebuild from Superstorm Sandy.

While New Jersey has strengthened building codes to reduce flooding risks Karr said he thinks Sandy is a wake-up call and that all the rules may need to be tweaked.
