Cherokee Co. student killed in car crash on SR 20

CHEROKEE COUNTY, Ga. -

A Cherokee County student body is grieving the sudden, heartbreaking loss of one of their own Friday.

Georgia State Patrol says it was about 3:30 a.m. Friday when 17-year-old Cheyenne Gabrielle Heard lost control of the 2000 Chevy Silverado she was driving eastbound on State Route 20. The Silverado strayed from the road, struck a culvert and overturned – ejecting Heard.

GSP says the teen was not restrained in her the truck. She suffered a fatal injury and was transported to Northside Cherokee Hospital.

Heard was a senior at Creekview High School.

Hundreds of students gathered at the football field on Friday for a balloon ceremony in honor of Heard.

"Cheyenne was beautiful inside and out in every way," said Bekah Braswell. "She always cared about people."

There was no official word on what caused Heard, of Canton, to lose control of the vehicle. They said speed was not a factor.
