Richardson police are trying to find out who left a dead goat at Berkner High School early Friday morning.
Richardson Independent School District spokesman Tim Clark confirmed the carcass was found hanging from a goal post on the practice field around 6 a.m.
Staff members removed it and called police, he said.
Members of the school's marching band were the first to see the dark colored goat tied at it's ankles, dangling from the field goal post.
The band directors ushered the students away but some took pictures. "I couldn't even look at the pictures, it was too sad," said Alexis Drake, a senior at Berkner High School.
"It's not really funny, it's not good sportsmanship, and animal cruelty is not something that should be taken lightly," said Gabby Gafford, also a senior at Berkner.
Investigators are now trying to find the goat's owner before opening an animal cruelty case.
Due to the incident, Richardson athletic officials notified Plano's athletic department since Berkner is playing Plano East this week.
Plano ISD had not heard about the strange appearance until FOX4 called to ask them about it.
Richardson ISD said no formal claims have been made about students from another school leaving the dead goat.
"They have to punish the person who did it because that is not for a laugh," said Wanda Martinez, a Berkner student's parent.
