Thompson: 'We want to see every vote counted'

Posted: Updated:

NEW YORK (AP) - The second-place finisher in the Democratic primary for mayor says every vote should be counted and the democratic process followed as the city's Board of Elections determines whether a runoff election will be needed.

Former City Comptroller William Thompson has declined to bow out, even though Public Advocate Bill de Blasio had a sizeable lead after Tuesday's primary election. It's unclear if de Blasio won the 40% needed to avoid an Oct. 1 runoff with Thompson, and the city's Board of Election is recanvassing the votes.

Thompson and de Blasio were both in Harlem on Sunday for the African American Day parade.

Republican mayoral candidate Joe Lhota was scheduled to be at events in Manhattan and Brooklyn.

The general election is Nov. 5
