VP Biden tours Savannah port with Gov. Deal, Mayor Reed

SAVANNAH, Ga. -

Vice President Joe Biden spent time in Georgia on Monday. He toured the Port of Savannah with Gov. Nathan Deal and Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed.

The State of Georgia is looking for support to deepen the port's harbor. Biden is also set to talk about how investing in the port could benefit the state, as well as the U.S.

Both Charleston and Savannah, who are in keen competition in the shipping business, are pursuing projects to deepen their harbor shipping channels to handle a new generation of larger containerships.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers recently announced that all field studies for the Charleston deepening project, expected to cost more than $300 million, are complete.

Last week, the vice president visited the Port of Baltimore. There he discussed a $10 million grant to help that port widen a shipping channel and increase storage capacity.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
