Dr. Oz Talks About Electronic Cigarettes

They're the cigarette alternative that's supposed to exceed a billion dollars in sales by the end of this year. While a recent study suggests that e cigarettes can help smokers quit, there's still very little known about them. That's a concern for Dr. Mehmet Oz of the Dr. Oz show.

Here's what he says to the FOX 29 audience:

As a heart surgeon, it's the one thing I'd never touch, a cigarette.

So, what about an e-cigarette? These electronic devices are growing in popularity, both for adults and kids, which is especially concerning to me.

While a recent study found e-cigarettes were as effective as nicotine patches when it came to quitting regular cigarettes, I'm not convinced they're a good tool to use to stop smoking.

The truth is, we still don't know the long-term health effects of e-cigarettes. That's why I am really concerned about kids. I'm not saying quitting smoking is easy; it's not, but millions have accomplished this lifesaving achievement before the e-cigarette fad exploded.

I could give you a bunch of ideas to stop smoking, but in reality, it all starts with a committed plan and confidence in your decision to quit.

As for your kids, talk to them early and often about the health benefits of not smoking. The good news is, if they don't pick up a cigarette before the age of eighteen, it's unlikely they will when they leave the nest.
