SAN TAN VALLEY, Ariz. -

Doggie doors may be convenient for dog owners. The pet can come and go as it pleases. But the problem is, lots of critters come and go too – which gave a big scare to a San Tan Valley woman.

"We were just trying to sweep him away. I'm around the corner like this… It was quite funny to see him trying to shoo him away!"

Sarah Cancl works for Dr. Marc Schmidt, a vet in San Tan Valley. She's seen lots of critters, but not a coyote in the kitchen.

"It was pretty insane. He was in here for 30 minutes. He finally ran off."

The coyote got into the kitchen through a dog door. Sarah's boss, the vet, doesn't like dog doors.

"I had people over the years where they had skunks, snakes, things like that come into the house through the doggie door. It's not unusual."

And Dr. Schmidt is not fond of doggie doors for that reason.

"It takes away an important interaction between the pet and the owner. But I do understand people need them for convenience," says Dr. Schmidt.

There are coyotes in almost every neighborhood in the valley, and they are always looking for something to eat.

"They are pretty clever critters. They smell something that smells like food, they do some wild stuff sometimes."

Sarah will be locking her doggie door from now on.

If you live in an area where they are coyotes and other wildlife, here's some tips.

Keep the doggie door closed. Walk your dogs on a leash and keep them close to you. Don't use any retractable leashes.

And if you think your dog is safe behind a fence, think again. Coyotes can jump an 8 foot wall with no problem.
