Two suspects were arrested after 282 pounds of marijuana was found during a traffic stop on Tuesday.

Members of the West Desert Task Force alerted Pinal County Sheriff's deputies that a suspicious 1994 Chevy Suburban was traveling near Highway 84 and Green Road.

When deputies pulled the vehicle over, they say two people ran out the rear doors and into the desert. They were never found.

The driver, 42-year-old Benito Alvarado Gonzalez, and the front seat passenger, 21-year-old Benito Joseph Garcia, stayed in the SUV and were arrested.

Deputies say they found 282 pounds of marijuana worth $211,500 in the vehicle.

Gonzalez and Garcia allegedly told deputies they were getting paid $6,000 to traffic the marijuana and an additional $300 per person they smuggled into the US.

Both men were booked into the Pinal County Adult Detention Center for possession of marijuana, possession of marijuana for sale and transportation of marijuana for sale.

The WDTF is made up of U.S. Border Patrol, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement's (ICE) Homeland Security Investigations and the Pinal County Sheriff's Office.
