TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) - A man shot by Tempe police for allegedly charging an officer with a box cutter last week has died.

Tempe police say 36-year-old Austin Del Castillo died Wednesday at a Tempe hospital.

He had been in critical condition since the Sept. 12 incident.

Police say they received a call about a man disturbing and threatening individuals in the downtown Tempe area with some sort of cutting instrument.

When the officer made contact with the suspect, he still had the box cutter in his hand.

The officer gave verbal commands to the suspect to drop the weapon, but the man refused and reportedly charged the policeman.

The officer then shot the man.

Police say the officer who shot Castillo is a 12-year veteran who has been placed on standard administrative leave.
