New App Strives To Make Paying At Restaurants Instantaneous

Posted: Updated:

You've finished that last bite. It's time to get up and go. But where's the waiter?

"We've heard from diners universally about the pain point around paying the check," says Brandon Bidlack, the senior marketing director of open table.

So Open Table, the online reservations site is now testing out a new bright idea: mobile technology that would allow diners to pay their bill through the Open Table app.

Most of the tests are happening in San Francisco, where Open Table is based. But one DC restaurant, "Founding Farmers," will begin testing the technology this week.

"The guest could sit for 2 hours, but when they're ready to go, they want to go!" says Dan Simons of Founding Farmers

Dan Simons, The Founding Farmer's Managing Partner, says that in a huge restaurant like his, it would be a great way for diners to communicate immediately with their server when they want to add to their order, change their mind, or just pay and go.

He says it's not just good for the guest, it's also good for business.

"The guest is more satisfied, the tables turn more quickly, the tip percentage is higher," he says.

"I think it would be really convenient to be able to pay and leave," opines a customer.

"Especially for lunch... I feel like we're always trying to get out and get out quickly," says another restaurant eater.

But launching the technology is no easy task.

Brandon Bidlack, senior marketing director at open table told us via Skype that they're trying to design the payment app to be as easy as possible to use.

"They have their meal just like normal, then at the end of the meal, ready to go, they bring out their mobile phone, check their bill, tap and they're done," he explains.

"If we can give the guest that final moment of total control, it can cap off the whole experience," says Simons.

Open Table still needs to work out a few bugs. The app is designing a way to know that customers have paid and haven't skipped out on their bills.

Once they smooth over those details, you could see it in a restaurant near you within about a year.
