CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

A grandmother, a 2-year-old girl and an infant being pushed in a stroller were struck by a car on the way to daycare in Englewood. The 2-year-old girl died Friday morning.

A 27-year-old man driving a 1999 Chrysler Concord struck the group at 6:24 a.m. Friday, travelling north on South Morgan Street in near West 56th Street. AirFOX observed a pair of baby shoes on the ground at the scene.

Contrary to initial reports, the 2-year-old girl was walking alongside her grandmother when she was struck. Witnesses told police the driver ran a stop sign before hitting the girl.

The infant and the grandmother were not hurt. But first responders took the 57-year-old woman to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County. Police News Affairs Officer John Mirabelli said her condition was "not serious, but she's emotionally distraught."

First responders took the toddler to University of Chicago Comer Children's Hospital in "extremely critical" condition. She did not survive her injuries. She was pronounced dead shortly after 7 a.m. Friday.

The Cook County Medical Examiner's office confirmed her death, but did not release her name.

After hitting the girl, the driver crossed the center lane and hit several construction horses before hitting two more vehicles. He tried to run away, but was later arrested by police patrolling the area.

Police believe alcohol may have factored in the crash. They continued to question the driver as detectives investigate.
