Texarkana man convicted of killing 2-year-old neighbor

NEW BOSTON, Texas (AP) - A Northeast Texas man has been convicted of murder in the fatal beating of a 2-year-old neighbor boy.

The penalty phase begins Friday in New Boston for 33-year-old Jimmy Paul Mahone of Texarkana, who faces up to life in prison.

The Texarkana Gazette (http://bit.ly/18FF2wL ) reports jurors took about 30 minutes Thursday to convict Mahone in last September's killing of Dalton Wayne Slaton.

Sheree Cooper, who also lives in the neighborhood, testified she believed Mahone was obsessed with the youngster.

The boy's mother, Raven Baxter, testified she had to go to work and left Dalton with another neighbor, who let Mahone take the boy outside to play.

A medical examiner determined the boy had a skull fracture and numerous other broken bones.
