Coca-Cola has apologized to a family in Canada for a shocking message under a bottle cap.
Blake Loates told the media that she saw "You Retard" when she opened her bottle of Vitamin Water on Tuesday. It was particularly offensive to her because her younger sister suffers from both cerebral palsy and autism.
"The R-word is just something we don't say in my family," she told Metro Canada.
Her father wrote an angry letter to the Coca-Cola board of directors demanding answers.
Although the family assumed the message was left by someone playing a joke or a disgruntled employee, Coca-Cola explained it was an unfortunately pairing of words as part of a contest.
The promotion involved printing one random English word and one random French word under each cap. Retard is the French word for late or delayed.
The company said it never intended for the words to appear together or for anyone to be offended.
It has canceled the contest and plans to destroy the remaining bottle caps.
