Driver fatally shot before crossing multiple lanes on 1-17

Updated:
PHOENIX -

A driver was suffering from a gunshot wound when he crossed multiple lanes and grazed a truck near I-17 and Loop 303 Monday morning.

Phoenix Police say a man in his 20s or 30s driving a car about 8:50 a.m. somehow crashed through a guard rail, flew across some land and then wound up on the freeway.

The car then reportedly went across four lanes, smashed into the center wall and went back across four more lanes.

Police say the car then grazed a white truck before coming to a stop on the side of I-17.

When authorities approached the vehicle, the deceased driver was in the car alone. The man had a gunshot wound and was reportedly dead before the crash ended.

Police say the incident doesn't appear to have been caused by road rage.

Police say there was a gun inside the car, but they don't know for sure if this was a suicide or if someone bailed out of the car after shooting the driver.

The driver of the white truck was not seriously hurt.

Phoenix Police are continuing to investigate.
