FOX 4's Heather Hays has an update on Lucky, the dog that was tied to a tree with a rubber hose.
Last month rescuers found the 6 to 8-month-old boxer mix weak and starving. Someone had tied the hose in a knot around his neck and tethered him to the tree in north Oak Cliff.
The pictures of the emaciated puppy are disturbing, even for those who see horrible abuse to animals all the time.
"I cried. How could someone do this to an animal is beyond me. Somebody that he trusted put him out there just to die," said Steven Basham with Apollo Support and Rescue.
Kayleigh Wetrich said she first noticed the Lucky while she was out for her afternoon walk. She heard a faint bark.
"He wasn't like aggressively barking at me. He was just like, 'Hey, leave me alone,'" she said.
She contacted Basham and he got there just as the puppy's organs were beginning to shut down.
Basham said he believed Lucky had a pretty good chance of making it because they got to him just in time. And in fact, that's how he got his name.
The rescuers now believe he is doing great. His blood work is back to normal and he seems happy and to be thriving.
But he still needs a home. Anyone interested in adopting him should visit www.apollosupportandrescue.com.
The person responsible for his condition was never found.
