MOUNT PROSPECT, Ill. (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

A Metra train fatally struck a 95-year-old bicyclist Wednesday morning in northwest suburban Mount Prospect.

Inbound Metra Union Pacific / Northwest Line train No. 626 left Barrington at 7:27 a.m. and struck a pedestrian in Mount Prospect about 7:50 a.m., Metra spokesman Tom Miller said. Reginald Gaetz, of the 100 block of South Lancaster Street in Mount Prospect, was dead at the scene, the Cook County Medical Examiner's office said.

Mount Prospect police said the inbound train struck the bicyclist near Central Road and Northwest Highway.

The 95-year-old man was riding east on Central Road on the sidewalk along the tracks when he apparently tried to cross in front of the train, according to a statement from Mount Prospect police.

The warning gates were down and the lights were flashing at the time, police said. No other injuries were reported.

Some trains experienced delays of up to two hours after the incident, but trains were on the move again by about 10 a.m., according to Metra's website.

Metra and Mount Prospect police are investigating.
