A war veteran ignites controversy in South Jersey. It involves a question of hate speech or free speech.
A sign that is on a Vietnam veterans front lawn has got a lot of neighbor talking. Some people may find it very offensive, some called it politically charged, maybe even hateful, but it's been up for four years with little recognition.
So you decide is it freedom of speech or hateful rhetoric?
An anonymous viewer expressed disgust to Fox 29 regarding this sign earlier this week. The man who owns the property on a busy cut through street says this sign has been up for about 8 months but he's had similar signs posted for 4 years.
"That's really non-offensive as far as I'm concerned everyone's entitled to their opinion. The symbolism is evil but he's got the right to put it up there," Steve Evans, a neighbor said.
A swastika, homosexual slur and old soviet flags on the other side of the home an upside down American flag, which is symbolic for a nation in distress. Most neighbors tell FOX 29 they didn't notice or care even if they disagreed with the symbols.
"He does not look like the type of gentleman who would be doing this. That's really non-offensive as far as I'm concerned everyone's entitled to their opinion," Evans said.
But an electrician working at a neighbor's house says he couldn't miss the sign.
The property owner says he is not affiliated with any political party but he isn't a fan of his congressman for several reasons. He explains the flags and verbiage he posts as things that he believes describe the congressman.
FOX 29's Stephanie Esposito reached out to Congressman Andrews' office; he said he's thankful people are free to express their political views.
