Coach Suspends Whole Team For 'Lack Of Character'

Posted: Updated:

A high school football coach in Utah suspends all 80 of his players for what he calls "a lack of character."

According to second-year Head Coach Matt Labrum, he was told by the guidance counselor that some of his players were accused of bullying another student, so he took action and now the whole team is paying the price.

The coach of Union High School says that he received complaints not only about bullying, but also about failing grades, players skipping classes and disrespecting teachers.

Instead of hitting the field for practice this week, the coach decided to go back to basics and make his players volunteer at rest homes, take part in "character training," help with their own families and write reports about what they have done to improve themselves.

Some of the teens seem to have gotten the message.

I think we deserve every little bit of it," said one player.

"And hopefully, it will show to everybody that football is not about just playing the game. You got to learn. And being a great person is really what all of this amounts to when you get older," said another.

Labrum says the team will be back on the field this weekend for the school's homecoming game.
