Roscoe Village businesses giving part of sales to schools

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

If you ever needed a reason to shop, small business owners in Roscoe Village have come up with a money making idea to help their neighborhood schools.

Up and down Roscoe Avenue in the 2100 and 2200 blocks, store owners and shoppers say there's nothing better to do Thursday but shop.

"They know how important the schools are and people give back to those stores and that's why they live in an area like this," shopper Shari Weil said.

The program is called Shop for Schools. Just over a dozen public and private schools in or near Roscoe Village will benefit.

All of the shops on Roscoe opened an hour early and will close an hour later just to raise some money. You can come in and buy things like truffle salt, truffle oil and truffle honey. You can buy whatever you want and 20 percent of your purchase goes towards the local school.

And when you pay for your items, customers are asked which school they'd like to support.

Store owners, like Trudy Robinson-Foley say in this economy, while schools have been asked to make drastic cuts and small business owners are taking a hit, it's a win-win for everyone in the community.

"We love to see the traffic on the street and also have a chance to have some new customers in the store who maybe have never been here and also give back to 15 different schools," Robinson-Foley said.

"Whatever they're going to do, hire their librarian that they might have lost or contribute to a new playground whatever it is, for us it's a no-brainer to do," said David Shelist, a store owner.

Shop for Schools raised about $10,000 for local schools last year. This year, they say, students need more.
