Vigil for Detroit boy killed in hit and run

Posted: Updated:

A large crowd gathered Thursday night at a vigil to remember 8-year-old Darrin Wilhite, the boy killed in a hit-and-run accident earlier this week. Several other local parents mourning children lost in other hit-and-run accidents also came to show their support.

Darrin, called "D.J." by his family, was riding his bike at West Chicago and Abington on Tuesday when he was struck by a vehicle. Police say he was dragged for about a block, and his bicycle was dragged for about a mile.

Darrin's father, Calais Kimling, had a message for everyone at the vigil: "Please be careful out here in these streets. You see how D.J. just got hit and dragged - they'll do the same thing to you. So please be careful. Stay out [of] the street, wear a helmet, and watch for these ignorant car drivers that [are] out here."

A 47-year-old man has been charged in connection with the boy's death. Wayne County prosecutors say Alfonso Butler will be arraigned Friday on a charge of leaving the scene of an injury accident causing death.

Police say Butler turned himself in to authorities Wednesday and acknowledged his involvement in the incident. Butler has previous convictions of second-degree murder; of possession and distribution of cocaine; and of a felony firearm charge. He spent several years in prison.
