Teen Heroin Deaths A Growing Problem

Posted: Updated:
RUNNEMEDE, N.J. -

There's a growing heroin problem among teens in our area, in the city and the suburbs.

Now it's catching the attention of police. As FOX 29's Jennifer Joyce reports, there have been two deadly heroin overdoses within day.

"We're seeing kids younger and younger starting at 9th, 10th, 11th grade," Paul Dailey, Runnemede Police Department said. "You interview these people with drug addictions. A lot of these people come from affluent towns. These aren't city kids, these aren't kids from poor areas. These are kids from middle, upper-middle class areas. These kids are coming from everywhere!"

Heroin, a power drug that police say is growing in popularity, is invading our schools, taking young lives and making parents sick to their stomachs.

The Camden County Prosecutor's Office confirms that within the first week and a half of the school year, 3 students in one section of Camden County overdosed on the drug.

A16-year-old female at Triton High school, and an 18-year-old male who formerly attended Triton, died within 3 days of one another. Investigators say a third student reportedly overdosed, but survived.

"I think we need to learn from this tragedy that parents need to step up and look at their children--what they're doing--who they're hanging out with," Paul Dailey said.

Runnemede Police Department Captain Paul Dailey said he finds that prescription pills in home medicine cabinet's act as gateway drugs to heroin. Parents should pay attention to the warning signs.

Parent Fred Hill of Gloucester Township agrees that parents must be proactive but also feels that our schools must step up.

"I want drug testing for every kid in there. I want police dogs up and down lockers when the kids are in class to me. It's unacceptable. Heroin at 14-15 years old? That's a real problem," Hill said. "We're going to Walgreen's and we're buying a drug test. And our son's going to take it. Because to me, that's the only way to know for sure.
