Illinois Tollway to tear down Des Plaines oasis

Posted: Updated:
DES PLAINES, Ill. (Associated Press) -

A northern Illinois concession area that's built atop Interstate 90 will be torn down.

The Des Plaines oasis on the Jane Addams Memorial Tollway will be razed next year to make way for a road-widening project. The building will shut down in April.

Ground-level gas stations and convenience stores will stay open while demolition work takes place.

Wendy Abrams is a spokeswoman for the Illinois Tollway.

She says relocating or rebuilding the over-the-road portion of the oasis would have been "prohibitively expensive."

The building was constructed in 1959 and was initially a destination point for people taking road trips to the suburbs.

After the work is done, I-90 will have a single oasis remaining in Belvidere.
