PHOENIX -

A man is in custody after leading police on a high-speed chase through three Arizona cities Sunday morning.

Police were called after someone thought the man was kidnapping a woman, who is believed to be his girlfriend or ex-girlfriend.

Someone reported the possible kidnapping at 68th and Northview in Glendale.

Just 2.5 miles later, the suspect was spotted at 55th Avenue and Northern.

He took off and police followed.

After the chase, with speeds reaching up to 85 mph, the suspect was caught at an apartment complex at 67th Avenue and McDowell.

It was a tense scene.

FOX 10 caught up to police when they had the suspect cornered at the complex in west Phoenix around 9 a.m.

Officers had guns at the ready and as they closed in on the man, FOX 10 was there as it went down.

A police helicopter circled overhead.

As officers had a section of the Westover Park Apartments at 67th Avenue and McDowell surrounded, their guns were drawn.

Inside, armed officers knocked on doors searching for a man that had just led them on a high speed chase. He was with a woman who police say he may have kidnapped.

People living in and around the apartments saw the commotion.

"I just woke up this morning and I kept on hearing the helicopter going around and around," said Alejandro Chavez.

"We know something serious is going on," said Brenda Esser.

Around 7 a.m., a Glendale man called police saying he thought he saw a woman get in a white truck with a man, against her will.

Around 8:30 a.m., Phoenix Police tried to stop the truck, but the suspect drove off, leading police on a chase through Glendale, Peoria and Phoenix.

Speeds topped at least 85 mph.

"The danger of letting him go outweighed the danger of not," said Phoenix Police Sgt. Greg Rath.

"There were several times where I was like, 'Eh, maybe we should terminate this?' But what if she was your daughter? Would you want us to chase her? I would," Rath continued.

Officers say they have a weapon that was thrown from the truck.

The suspect pulled into the Westover Park Apartments and bailed.

A fleet of officers scoured the property and arrested the suspect who police say is 35-year-old Michael Rodriguez.

"We found him hiding in the vehicle with the girl that he may or may not have possibly kidnapped," said Rath.

Police are talking with the woman to figure out exactly what happened and if she was kidnapped.

The suspect faces charges for leading police on a chase and being a felon in possession of a firearm.

No one was injured during the pursuit or arrest.
