Man shot to death in downtown Phoenix street

Police are investigating after they say a man was gunned down in the street near 3rd Avenue and Grant Street.

Phoenix Police say a 20-year-old Hispanic man was shot to death on Sunday night.

Witnesses tell officers they heard a loud argument, then several shots.

"The only thing we have from witnesses is that they saw a bunch of individuals running from the scene and it being 8:30 at night, it's kind of difficult for witnesses to see," said Phoenix Police Lt. Lowell Spalla.

Witnesses told police the victim had been involved in an altercation with another male prior to the shooting.

Detectives followed up on leads, and the suspect was later identified as a 17-year-old male. His name will not be released until he is charged as an adult.

Police say he admitted to the crime. He was booked into the Juvenile Court Center on a second degree murder charge.

The victim has still not been identified.
