An off-duty investigator with the New York State Police was killed in a plane crash on Sunday, authorities said.

Senior Investigator Timothy J. Cowper, an avid and experienced pilot, died when the single engine plane he was piloting crash landed in a wooded lot in Edinburg, a town in Saratoga County, at about 4:30 p.m., police said.

"The thoughts and prayers of the entire New York State Police family go out to Senior Investigator Cowper's loved ones during this difficult time," Superintendent Joseph A. D'Amico said in a statement.

He was a 30-year veteran of the State Police. His latest assignment was at Division Headquarters in Albany. Over the years, he had served with Troop G in the Capital Region, Troop D in the Oneida area, and in New York City, police said.

Cowper is survived by his wife, three children, father, and three brothers.

"Through his years of service, he helped make New York State safer for families just like his, and he will be greatly missed," Gov. Andrew Cuomo said in a statement. "My thoughts and prayers are with the friends and family of Senior Investigator Cowper."
