Federal shutdown would have local impact

Posted: Updated:
DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. -

Several thousand workers would be affected by a government shutdown.

Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed said that 44,000 jobs in the metro Atlanta region would be impacted by a government shutdown.

At the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in DeKalb County, extensive furloughs are planned, which would affect lab research and disease surveillance programs.

CDC officials would not comment in advance of a shutdown, but a memo spells out its likely impact on operations.  The memo describes "... a significantly reduced capacity to respond to outbreak investigations..."

The CDC said reductions would include the annual flu surveillance program.

National Park Service Superintendent Judy Forte said she plans to call for an early-morning meeting Tuesday with employees at the Martin Luther King Jr. National Historic Site. If there's no funding, that Atlanta site and other national parks will close.

"We will report to work in the morning. We will get the official notification. I will notify all of the employees of a furlough," Forte said.

Some local workers will get paid from a budget that is funded until the end of the year. Other essential employees, like many who work at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, will continue working as well.
