MESQUITE, Texas -

A Mesquite man is now behind bars for killing his dog because it allegedly ruined his patio furniture.

Police charged 59-year-old Robert Prichard him with felony animal cruelty.

According to court documents, a neighbor called police on Aug. 30 after allegedly hearing Prichard throw his pit bull in a pool and yell "You are dead, dog."

The documents state he answered to the door covered in blood. He told officers his dog had chewed on the patio pillows and was likely dead in its doghouse.

During questioning he gave investigators several different explanations of how the animal died. He said he threw it in the pool to "cool her off" and beat it in self-defense.

But the police found video on his surveillance cameras showing him beat it to death with a shovel.

A judge increased his bond to $50,000 because of previous criminal history.
