Nick Canon Awards North Philly Teen With Halo Award

Posted: Updated:
PHILADELPHIA -

Nick Cannon, the host of "America's Got Talent" and the husband of Mariah Carey, surprised a North Philadelphia teen with an award for his work in the community.

Cannon presented Denzel Austin Thompson with a TeenNick Halo Award when he visited Thompson at his urban farm, which used to be an old garbage site. The old garbage site took three years of hard work to clear up. Thompson started his urban farming initiative as an after school program. After getting the farm up and running, he lost more than 150 pounds due to newfound eating habits and ability to get fresh food. Now he gives the whole community an ability to access fresh foods.

Not only does the Agora Cyber Charter School student get to go the awards ceremony, he also gets $10,000 and a date with a celebrity mentor. Thompson is the first recipient of the award from Philly.

The 19-year-old has big plans for his award money. He wants to expand his urban farming project nationally. Thompson is a senior in high school and wants to attend Temple University.
