Thornwood students honor security guard killed breaking up fight

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

More than 100 people--mostly students--gathered Wednesday night on Thornwood High School's football field to remember the security guard they affectingly called, "Hulk," who died while trying to break up a fight.

The students say 54-year-old Richard Cowser looked just like Hulk Hogan, with the mustache and his muscular build.

School officials used the candlelight vigil to also remind students that this tragic incident should be a teaching moment. Last Thursday, Cowser was breaking up a fight between two female students when, according to authorities, he fell against a locker and had trouble breathing. He was pronounced dead at the hospital. Some students report the fight was over a pair of jeans.

At the vigil it was evident Richard "Hulk" Cowser was a beloved figure in the school.

The females involved in the fight were interviewed by police, but have not been charged. School officials present at the vigil would not comment about the disciplinary actions the students may face.

An autopsy on Cower's body was inconclusive, but it also determined he did not die from blunt force trauma.
