A group of students from Georgia were in the nation's capital when a police chase and shooting prompted a lockdown on Thursday.

Police say a woman with a year-old child in her vehicle attempted to penetrate security barriers at the White House and the Capitol. She was shot and killed after leading authorities on a chase.

Students from Kennesaw State University were in Washington, D.C. for a national conference. They were on the Capitol steps for a meeting with Georgia Sen. Johnny Isakson when the commotion broke out.

"All of a sudden, you know, we hear these gunshots and we see police officers like running to their motorcycles and grabbing rifles," said Bernard McCrary, the KSU Student Government Association advisor.

McCrary and the three students traveling with him were herded back to the Capitol by police.

"They actually searched us before they let us in the building. They searched us very thoroughly, the students as well, before they let us into the building," he said.

McCrary said the ordeal was unreal.

"It felt almost like you were in a movie, it was a surreal moment. I didn't know if it was really happening," McCrary. "You see this kind of thing happen on television all the time, but you never think of yourself like being right there in that moment. So it was kind of crazy. All of it happened all so fast."

The students were emotionally shaken, but otherwise OK, McCrary said. The group will return on Sunday.
