NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

New York Mets pitcher Matt Harvey will have surgery to repair the elbow injury that ended his season early, the team announced Friday.

Harvey will have the surgery later this month to repair the partial tear of the ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow, according to Jay Horwitz, the team's spokesman.

Recovery and rehab from elbow surgery can take up to a year, according to the AP. That means Harvey, 24, would likely miss the entire 2014 season.

The right-hander pitched so well early this season that he was selected to start the All-Star Game, played in his home ballpark.

Harvey went 9-5, with a 2.27 ERA and 191 strikeouts in 26 starts over 178-1/3 innings, according to Baseball-Reference.com.
