Pentagon To Rehire 400,000 Furloughed Workers

Posted: Updated:
WASHINGTON -

At least 400,000 furloughed federal employees will be headed back to work.

The Pentagon said Saturday it's rehiring those workers, though they won't be paid until the shutdown ends.

There is good news for other government employees. The House of Representatives unanimously passed a bill that would give all furloughed workers backpay when everything is settled.

But lawmakers on both sides of the aisle are not optimistic that the shutdown will end anytime soon.

"We continue to pass bills to the final hour that would fund the government. Most Americans don't realize that our final bill, that all we asked was for the Senate to sit down and talk about our differences," said Rep. Kevin McCarthy, the Republican majority whip.

"If you will agree to pass a short-term bill and to move the conference to the final budget discussion for this fiscal year, we will not offer any motions to instruct," said Minority Leader Rep. Nancy Pelosi.
