Church comes together to support domestic violence victim

Posted: Updated:
Paradise, TX -

October is Domestic Violence Month and Dallas is giving top priority to the issue.  Not just from City Hall but to the police department and courthouse, as well.  On Sunday the Congregation at Covenant Word Church in Paradise, which is about an hour northwest of Dallas, came together to support 31-year-old Mara Arbizu.  The mother of two is a domestic abuse survivor.  Last week, her common law husband Elias Perez was sentenced to seven years in prison for crushing Arbizu with his truck.  Her leg had to be amputated and her bladder and private parts had to be removed.   She now struggles to raise her children.  Dallas police say this is unfortunately not an unusual story, adding that the respond to 7,000 domestic violence calls every year.  Last year, Dallas police investigated 26 murders because of domestic violence.

The congregation raised $700 for Arbizu and her children.  She says that money will go a long way because she is still unable to work due to her injuries.
