Neighbors shocked by Dallas murder-suicide

Posted: Updated:

A murder-suicide Monday night may have been caused by jealousy, according to neighbors who sheltered two children while the chaos unfolded.

Dallas SWAT officers arrived in the 7300 block of Fillmore Road after neighbors said they heard three or four gunshots and found 34-year-old Esmerelda Gonzalez dead on the front porch.

The neighbors said they confronted her husband, who said he killed her because he thought she was cheating on him. Efraim Gonzalez then walked to the backyard and shot himself.

Neighbors said they're shocked because the family seemed to get along well.

"They were a really close family. Take trips, they would go on vacation. So we didn't expect this from them," said Marilu Gonzalez, who is not related.

The couple's two children, a 17-year-old girl and a 10-year-old boy, were home at the time of the incident. Friends said they are coping as best as they can now and staying with family members.
