Princeton University and local police officers investigated a report of gunshots on campus but later gave the "all clear" after searching a building and said no one was hurt, the university said Tuesday evening. Princeton police believe the report of gunfire was "unfounded."

The Ivy League institution, located in Princeton, N.J., sent out these messages via Twitter:

"Public safety has received a report of gunshots at Nassau Hall. Princeton Police responded; no one hurt. DPS says avoid area."

"Public safety is diverting everyone away from Nassau Hall. Please avoid the area."

"Repeating: Police have cordoned off Nassau Hall -- and only Nassau Hall -- after public safety got a report of gunshots in the building."

"Princeton Police have set up a close-in perimeter around Nassau Hall, and University Public Safety officers are at a wider perimeter."

"Latest info available: Nassau Hall cordoned off after what were believed to be gunshots were heard inside."

"Recapping: Nassau Hall remains cordoned off; there was a report of what sounded like gunfire in building earlier this evening. No one hurt."

"UPDATE -- ALL CLEAR. Princeton Police have searched building, found nothing. No one hurt."

"REPEATING -- ALL CLEAR: @PrincetonPolice searched building, found nothing. They believe reports of gunshots were unfounded."

Nassau Hall, a historic building in the northwest section of the main campus, houses administrative offices.
