(WJBK) -

October is National Bullying Prevention Month. On Thursday, Lori Kanat Edelson from the Birmingham Maple Clinic, stopped by FOX 2 to talk about bullying and ways to prevent it.

What is bullying

Unwanted, aggressive behavior among individuals that involves a real or perceived imbalance of power. The behavior is repetitive and has the potential to be repeated over time.  Aggressors and victims may have serious, lasting problems.

What is Cyber Bullying
Bullying that takes place using electronic technology, including devices and equipment such as cell phones, computers and tablets as well as communication tools including social media sites, text messages, chat and websites.

Statistics:

  • Approximately 15-20% of children in the US are bullied during their school years and only 1/3 of them notified an adult.
  • An estimated 160,000 children stay out of school on any given day because they are afraid of being bullied.
  • Rates for mental health problems, substance abuse and suicide are some of the effects of bullying (those who bully and those bullied).
  • LGBT youth, youth with special needs, and youth from minority groups, are the most bullied groups of children.
  • Bullying occurs in a myriad of venues: school, work, military, legal, and in families.

What can parents look for in children who may be bullied:

  • More cautious, sensitive, quiet, withdrawn, and/or shy and avoiding "normal" activities
  • Anxious and insecure or seem depressed and may engage in suicidal ideation
  • Complain that no one likes them, they have no friends, feel inferior to others
  • Kids who are perceived as different from their peers (overweight, underweight, minority, gender issues, new to the area, etc.)

How to prevent bullying:

  • Bullying has always been a dynamic in human relations, but it is becoming more prevalent and gaining more attention than ever before.
  • Implement more communication within the family as a "regular routine."
  • Teach kids how to treat others properly in social, school, and work settings by direct education and modeling behaviors.
  • Engage authorities in the setting where the bullying is occurring.
  • Devise a safety plan for the victim.
