Great Georgia Airshow goes on despite government shutdown

Posted: Updated:
PEACHTREE CITY, Ga. -

The government shutdown and sequestration are taking a toll on the air show industry.

One of the state's biggest air shows is set for this weekend in Peachtree City. Organizers of the Great Georgia Airshow say they have had to be creative to fill the sky due to politics in Washington.

While the government shutdown and sequestration are taking a toll on the air show industry, the show will go on at Falcon Field this weekend.

More civilian acts will be in the sky after the cancellation of some military groups.

Organizers promise there will still be plenty of fun to be had at this year's event.  There will more food, more displays and more live music. But the main event will still be up in the air.

"We've got great acts coming in with jets and aerobatics. We've got comedy, we have a jet truck.  We've got the Misty Blues all-lady jump team and a lot more in the air," said Great Georgia Airshow director Angie Faulise.

One of the military acts that had to cancel is the U.S. Army's Golden Knight parachute team.  They are the Army's elite jump team. Their function is not only to entertain but also inspire young people to join the army.  It's worried that without military acts performing at air shows, the country loses.

"I'm a product of that. When I was four years old, I saw the Thunderbirds fly at McCoy Air Force Base. I became an Air Force pilot a few years later and did a 20-year career," said Faulise. "What's going on right now, with not having the modern military at air shows, we may not see an effect now, but 20 years from now, the kids who might have made the decision to make a career in the military might make a different decision."

The Great Georgia Airshow has replaced the Golden Knights with the Misty Blues, all-female civilian parachute team. Like the Golden Knights, the Misty Blues can both entertain and inspire.

"We like to promote to young kids, especially young girls, that you can do anything you set your mind to," said Cindy Irish of the Misty Blues.

The air show has added an extra night – Friday – this year.

Gates open at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday. Acts begin at 12:30 p.m.
