A Granbury man will spend the rest of his life in prison for killing his mom and then draining her bank account.
Thomas Grady Layton, 48, was sentenced to life without parole for the 2010 murder of 64-year-old Grada Layton.
Collin County District Attorney Greg Willis said Layton went to his mother's Plano home to watch TV with her. He shot her from behind after she fell asleep in her recliner.
Witnesses at the trial testified that although his mother had given him a car, a house and was supporting him financially, Layton treated her with contempt and thought she should be giving him even more money.
Investigators determined Layton used his mother's debit card to drain her bank account shortly after her death.
Layton admitted what he had done to his stepson, the district attorney said.
He was convicted of capital murder and received a mandatory sentence of life without parole because the crime included both robbery and murder.
