Teen indicted for shooting death of Denton Guyer player

Posted: Updated:

A Montague County Grand Jury indicted a teen Monday for the shooting death of a Denton Guyer football player.

Michael Bryce Underwood, 17, was indicted for manslaughter, a second degree felony.

Authorities said at the time that Nathan Maki, 18, was shot in the head accidentally by Underwood on Aug. 31. Underwood was arrested for a minor in consumption of alcohol.

"This is a tragedy for all involved," said Montague County District Attorney Paige Williams. "The lesson for everyone is simple: Introducing alcohol into any situation can affect not only your life, but the lives of your friends and family. Nathan's friends need to remember him before they think of consuming alcohol."

Police found Maki's body in pickup truck in a field near Bowie. Friends said Maki was on a hunting trip when the shooting occurred.

Any potential trial would occur in fall 2014.
