Police bust alleged chop shop in Clayton County

Posted: Updated:
ELLENWOOD, Ga. -

Authorities busted a suspected chop shop in Clayton County on Tuesday.

Clayton County police said a tip led them to the home on Forest Parkway in Ellenwood. The tipster told authorities that stolen vehicles were being brought to the location, cut up and then sold off in pieces on the black market.

Investigators spent the afternoon searching for vehicle identification numbers at the house.

Tim Adamson and his sister, Jane Merrill, said their elderly father is the owner of the home, which is rented out. They said they weren't sure who the current tenant was because their father is recovering from a sickness.

They arrived at the property after learning police had gathered search warrants to enter the premises in search of evidence of a chop shop.

"I hadn't heard anything like that until today, just a few minutes ago from some of the other tenants that are close by, but they said they had heard gunshots over here," Merrill said.

Police said they found four Rottweilers tied up in the back yard. The dogs were left to animal control officials. Police also searched the home, which apparently turned up empty.

The property owners told FOX 5's George Franco that the chop shop allegations would be the final straw for the home's tenants.

"He's about to get an eviction letter anyway," Merrill said.

Investigators did confiscate two engines. They said they are working in conjunction with another police agency in metro Atlanta and expect to make more raids later.

Authorities said they do anticipate to arrest the tenant soon.
