DESOTO, Texas -

Police have arrested a man they said shot his estranged wife and one of her sons.

It happened at about 9 p.m. Wednesday in the 500 block of Meadow Hill Drive in DeSoto.

Richard Dewayne Richard allegedly opened fire on Nicole Richard and her two sons as they tried to leave her mother's house.

"My daughter said it caught them by surprise and all of a sudden he just popped up and opened fire on my grandson. Cory was here and Cody was in the back seat of the car. And he shot all the way around the care and when he got to her, he put the gun literally to the window and shot at her head and shot five times and missed," said Emory Howell, the victim's mother.

Police responded to a car riddled with bullets in a Walgreens parking lot a few blocks away.

Nicole was only grazed by a bullet and her youngest son was not hurt. But 15-year-old Cory Dooley, a student at South Grand Prairie High School, was hit several times. He is now recovering in the hospital after surgery.

Richard surrendered to officers at the home. He was charged with aggravated assault and child endangerment.
