Experts: Beware of bears

Posted: Updated:

Wildlife experts are warning people to take precautions after numerous bear sightings in the metro Atlanta area.

There is growing concern that people and their smartphones are risking injury by getting too close to the animals.

SKYFOX 5 showed curious people get close to a mother and her cubs that were wandering near a Forsyth County neighborhood.

"Nobody should ever approach a bear, whether it's up a tree or cornered in their yard or on their porch of their house," said Scott Frazier of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources.

DNR officials said that they are seeing more black bears than ever, which leads them to believe that the population in the state is increasing substantially.

Officials said they are also seeing bears with more than two cubs, which is a new, unexplained development.

Residents should not put trash cans close to doors or on their decks. That could attract bears.

Experts also warn that bears are very quick, so don't get close.

"Bears generally tell you when you are too close. They do things like snapping their teeth together -- we call it popping their jaws," Frazier said. "In some cases when they are feeling extremely threatened, particularly sows [female bears], they will rear up and slap the ground."
