Village Halloween Parade to go on

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

No one could be happier than the owner of the Village Party Store and other costume shops that the Village Halloween Parade is going forward.

Varun Penday said the shop really suffered when the 2012 parade was cancelled because of Superstorm Sandy. He said the parade drives at least 50 to 80 percent of the store's business.

The Village Halloween Parade has a long tradition and a reputation for the spooky and often outrageous disguises.

Superstorm Sandy forced parade organizers to cancel it for the first time. The nonprofit group said it lost a lot of money that had to be paid up front.

So the parade was in jeopardy of being cancelled again. So an online Kickstarter campaign was launched to raise money. It worked, and now the parade will go on.

A bicycle rental war is being waged in Central Park by Columbus Circle. Bike and Roll is a Parks Department-sanctioned bike rental with rental booths in the park complete with helmets and bouncer-size security guards. Bike and Roll's president says his employees are being threatened and harassed by non-licensed illegal vendors in the park while they hawk to tourists. The individual vendors, who appeared to be trying to rent out bicycles using pedicab licenses, were not friendly to us, either.
