The First United Methodist Church in Birmingham holds weekly yoga sessions for moms and their newborn - or toddler-aged child. The class is called "Spirit Baby Yoga."

"I think it's really important for [the babies] to see mom breathe and relax. Life can be stressful with a young baby and it's just really great to slow down and take care of yourself, and for baby to see that," says yoga instructor Nichole Richards.

The class is tailored for moms with kids anywhere from six weeks old to three years old.

"The same benefits that adults get from yoga, the babies will get. But if we're also helping the parents to be in a more relaxed, calm state, the babies will be too because as we live, it reflects in our home," says Katherine Austin, founder of "Spirit Baby."

Some research indicated that as children grow yoga can increase the sense of calm, especially in babies, lower stress and improve sleep.

"It's a great bonding thing, for both of us. Honestly it's helped her with her sleeping, and it's just a great healthy thing for us to do together," Kate King says as she holds her daughter, Fiona. "I think establishing healthy things like this, now, for us to do together, I think that she's understanding that now."
