Columbus launches program to control feral cats

Posted: Updated:

COLUMBUS, Ga. (AP) - Columbus has started a program to reduce the city's feral cat population.

Special Enforcement Manager Drale Short says more than 200 feral cats have been trapped, spayed or neutered and returned to the wild since the program began in mid-September.

The program is being financed in part with a $58,250 grant from PetSmart. The money will pay for spaying or neutering 1,000 cats. Short says managing the feral cat population is critical because one female can have four litters a year.

Mayor Teresa Tomlinson told the Columbus Ledger-Enquirer that the euthanasia rate at Animal Care and Control is already trending downward and the new program should continue to reduce it.
